The Art of War – Sun Tzo | Rob’s Best Business Books

10

You may be wondering what a book on war strategy has to do with business; but some may argue it has EVERYTHING to do with it.

This week, we are reviewing The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Now, as a sales and marketing agency you may be wondering why on earth we are now reviewing books. Put simply, we are here to help and to see you succeed, and by giving you free advice, support and tips then we are most certainly doing all we can to give you support.

In this mini-series entitled Rob’s Best Business Books (which also comes with a corresponding weekly vlog which can be found on our YouTube Channel and our Facebook page), we are reviewing the business books which we have found to be most beneficial, motivating and rewarding.

The Art of War dates from the late Spring and Autumn period, roughly around 5th century bc. It is an ancient Chinese military treatise attributed to the military strategist Sun Tzu.

Taken direct from Wikipedia, we are told:

“The book contained a detailed explanation and analysis of the Chinese military, from weapons and strategy to rank and discipline. Sun also stressed the importance of intelligence operatives and espionage to the war effort. Because Sun has long been considered to be one of history’s finest military tacticians and analysts, his teachings and strategies formed the basis of advanced military training for millennia to come.”

So how does this fit in with a business model?

“Many business books have applied the lessons taken from the book to office politics and corporate business strategy. Many Japanese companies make the book required reading for their key executives. The book is also popular among Western business circles citing its utilitarian value regarding management practices. Many entrepreneurs and corporate executives have turned to it for inspiration and advice on how to succeed in competitive business situations. The book has also been applied to the field of education.”

The Art of War is a short read, and could quite easily be completed in one swift sitting. However, that being said, we recommend you digest it a couple of times over. Allow time for it to sink in. Re-read it and highlight the points within. The metaphors used within, especially when trying to manipulate it into a business sense are wonderful if you are patient with it.

As always, we have posted a link below for you to be able to order your very own copy. We would love to know what you think to this book so please do drop a comment below and let us know your thoughts.

As a reminder, don’t forget that our blogs come out every Monday at 8pm, and our corresponding vlogs go out on our YouTube channel and Facebook page every Wednesday.

Keep your eyes peeled for more book recommendations coming out over the coming weeks and months.
