Working in sales can be very fun; but also very challenging.
Working in sales is diverse. It is rewarding. It is tough. Overall, it is a worthy career to get into.
However, like many jobs, it can be really hard work to climb to the top and to become the best. Of course, many sales professionals work heavily on commission and it is so important to be the best you can be to ensure your earning potentials are as limitless as possible.
Plus, as sales people are constantly under pressure to perform, working in sales can come with a heavy rate of staff turnover.
If you have stumbled across this blog, there is a high chance you are looking to become better at sales, to secure your career, and to also be the best you can be.
I have worked in sales for over ten years. I have also trained and mentored some of the best sales people across the world, authored three books on sales and have driven the sales of my own start up business; all of this experience has allowed me to understand what works, and what doesn’t work when it comes to sales.
So without further a due, here are my top tips on what you can do to become a great salesperson.
Study
The more you learn, the more you earn; a saying that certainly rings true for people working in sales. It can be so easy to work in sales and just rest easy on your own ‘natural ability’, or just use a hit and miss method to it all.
Over the years, I have not only experienced first hand, but witnessed within others what happens when sales people start to study. Those sales people that study, read, and learn are ALWAYS the top performers in any business.
Invest your spare time to read sales books, watch webinars, listen to podcasts, and to speak to your peers and mentors to learn from them too.
There is so much advice and support for sales people out there; all you have to do is to take the time to learn and to fill your head full of wonderful ideas.
Remain Social
Everyone is a customer. Or knows your next customer. So treat everyone you meet with respect and use your investigate skills to understand their needs, pain points and also learn their contacts too.
Put simply, the more people you speak to the better.
Go to networking events. Speak to people at the bus stop. Talk to the server who brings you your tea at the popular brunch place. Be a social butterfly.
The more people you speak to, and the more contacts you make, the higher the chance you will meet your next customer.
Work Hard
People’s perception of salespeople is that all they do is socialise, party, and dine out all day every day. And yes, this does happen quite a lot, but there is a lot more to sales that the public do not see.
They do not see the early morning starts, sacrificing family time to meet clients, driving for hours along boring motorways for meetings, the research, and even the horrible room service meals in cheap hotels the night before a presentation.
Although these things sound negative, they are actually quite positive. If you can relate to any of the above statements then you know what it is like to work hard and to do all you can to get the sale.
Plus, your competition is always one step behind you; so make sure you keep in front! Work harder, get up earlier if you have to, go to bed later, work out, exercise, study – and you will always come out on top.
Never Give Up
Making a sale is never easy; and you will face rejection time after time. You will have doors slammed in your face, phones put down on you, and you will see your prospect opting for your competitors options time after time.
As a true sales professional, you are going to have to learn to take this rejection on the chin and to not let it affect you too much – which can be very tough!
Sure, be willing to learn from each rejection! Seek feedback and work on it so that you rarely feel this punch in the gut.
Take Time for YOU
No matter what people say, YOU are the most important person in your universe. If you do not take time for you, and allow yourself to be selfish from time to time then you are only going to work yourself to an early grave.
Your mind, body and soul are so important to your career and if you are not operating to the best of your ability you are never going to make a sale again In your life. So ensure you are eating well, exercising, spending time with your loved ones, watching your favourite movies and doing all you can to ensure you are looking after yourself.
There we have it; some simple tips on what you can do to become a great sales person. Simple, easy to follow, but guaranteed to help you to become a top earner in your business.
Now, get out there and start selling!
