Struggling with Your New Years Resolution?

goals

Ahhhh the New Year has come around again.

Is it going to be New Year New You?

Every year we are swept along with this craze of New Year’s Resolutions and for many, these soon die out and we are back where we started. So why is this?

Listen, New Years Resolutions are awesome. In theory. They give us that kick up the ass that we have been crying out for for perhaps the 6 months prior. They remind us of the life in which we have wanted to participate in or the motivation that we have been lacking for so long.

However, if this is the case, then why do so many people fail so quickly?

The problem with New years resolutions is that although they are thought of as goals, they are more of a whisper of a promise that you hope to achieve. Allow me to explain; goals only work if they are specific, measurable and time sensitive. What do you think the most common New Year’s Resolutions are?

  • I want to lose weight.
  • I want more money.
  • I want a better job.
  • I want to be happier.

Do these all sound familiar to you? Perhaps you have made resolutions like these before, or perhaps know someone that has? What do you think the main issue with these resolutions are? As mentioned earlier, they just are not measurable, time sensitive, or specific. Let’s break it down slightly:

You want to lose weight? Ok – how much weight? In what space of time? If you were to lose a pound in the space of four weeks, would you be happy?

Oh, and you want more money? Ok, next week I am going to hand you a £10 note – that’s fine, right?

What defines a better job? Better hours? Better pay? Better career aspirations?

Happiness is a journey, not a destination right. So if I came over, plenty of sweets, chocolate with your favourite movie – would that make you happier than before?

Do you see the point I am trying to make? All of these are very relevant resolutions, but before long you will soon drop off and lose all motivation for them.

So what should you do?

Firstly, do not set New Years Resolutions. Set goals! The mindset and thought process behind goals are far more solid than New Years Resolutions.

Secondly, specify your goal to the tee! Don’t leave any room for movement. Make it as specific as possible. If you want to lose ten pounds – lose ten pounds. Instead of wanting to become richer, specify how much more money you want saved up!

Every goal needs to be measurable. Once again, there is no point in just losing weight. How much weight do you want to lose? Can you measure the start of the goal in comparison to the end?

And finally, make it time sensitive. How long do you want to wait for this goal to be achieved? Here is a tip – don’t make them too ambitious, and do not make them too easy to achieve.

Actually, one final note – always keep your goals written down and left prominent somewhere you will see often. One of the main reasons New Years Resolutions fail is because they are not made a priority and are forgotten about. Write your goals down, stick them somewhere you will look at near enough every day, and never forget them.

Here’s to a successful and prosperous New Year!
