Invent & Wander – Jeff Bezos | Rob’s Best Business Books

2

Ok, I know at the start of the last post I mentioned that it would be the last in this series on my most favourite business books – but I have had a re-think.

You see, I absolutely love to read, and I have no doubt in my mind that it is my studying and my reading that has truly helped me to elevate my career to where it is now. And if I continue to digest as much information as I quite possibly can then I am sure my career and business will continue.

This week, I am reviewing Jeff Bezos’ ‘Invent & Wander’. Now, this is by no means an auto-biography. Compiled bu the legendary Walter Isaacson (whom has written the biographies of many incredible entrepreneurs and leading thinkgs), this book is full of Jeff’s letters to his shareholders since 1997, and also some of his notes from speeches etc.

I believe that this is the first time Jeff has had any of his writing compiled and it truly makes for a fascinating read. The reason why I rate it so highly is that, whether you like him or not, Jeff Bezos is one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time. Sure, some may argue he had a head start over many, but he has had a huge impact on this world, and as the years go on that impact is growing.

Put by Amazon:

In Jeff Bezos’s own words, the core principles and philosophy that have guided him in creating, building, and leading Amazon and Blue Origin.

In this collection of Jeff Bezos’s writings—his unique and strikingly original annual shareholder letters, plus numerous speeches and interviews that provide insight into his background, his work, and the evolution of his ideas—you’ll gain an insider’s view of the why and how of his success. Spanning a range of topics across business and public policy, from innovation and customer obsession to climate change and outer space, this book provides a rare glimpse into how Bezos thinks about the world and where the future might take us.

Written in a direct, down-to-earth style, Invent and Wander offers readers a master class in business values, strategy, and execution:

  • The importance of a Day 1 mindset
  • Why “it’s all about the long term”
  • What it really means to be customer obsessed
  • How to start new businesses and create significant organic growth in an already successful company
  • Why culture is an imperative
  • How a willingness to fail is closely connected to innovation
  • What the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us

Each insight offers new ways of thinking through today’s challenges—and more importantly, tomorrow’s—and the never-ending urgency of striving ahead, never resting on one’s laurels. Everyone from CEOs of the Fortune 100 to entrepreneurs just setting up shop to the millions who use Amazon’s products and services in their homes or businesses will come to understand the principles that have driven the success of one of the most important innovators of our time.

For me, I found the book very inspiring. With each page there seems to be a relevant business lesson that has truly inspired me and allowed me to think slightly differently.

If you are an entrepreneur, business owner, sales person or just want to improve your career, there is no denying that this book is for you!
